Janbiya

Janbiya

This janbiya is a traditional dagger with a short, curved blade. It has an ornate silver handle decorated with beaded edges and rounded ends. The scabbard curves into a clear “J” shape and is richly decorated with detailed silver patterns created using small beads and fine metalwork.

The matching silver belt features alternating “X” and diamond-shaped links, each decorated with a central bead and open designs. Attached to the belt are two small cylindrical kohl containers and a small hinged box. All of these elements are finely detailed, showing the high level of skill and care used in creating this piece.

This particular janbiya was crafted by Hassan Muhammad in the late 1930s and later acquired in the 1990s. It reflects both artistic skill and cultural significance, representing a craft tradition passed down through generations.

History

The janbiya, also spelled jambiya, is a strong symbol of identity and heritage across the Arabian Peninsula, especially in Saudi Arabia, Yemen, and Oman. While it is still worn daily in some regions in Saudi Arabia, it is mainly worn for ceremonial purposes during festivals and special occasions.
